BP Volunteers Chill on the Water (and Practice Rescues)

BP volunteers work hard. You can find them in trainings, in exercises, supporting events like the recent Rotary Auction, and responding to real-life emergencies. But August 5 you might have seen 14 of them paddling in the water.

That’s because, as part of its ongoing engagement efforts, BP was hosting a volunteer kayaking social in Hidden Cove. But, even during a social, our volunteers are never content with simply lollygagging. BI Parks and Rec provided instructors for the event and taught participants how to perform a T-Rescue on the water.

A T-Rescue involves forming a T-between the kayaks of the capsized kayaker and the rescuer before the duo slide the empty upside-down kayak onto the rescuer’s boat deck. Then they get the boats side by side, bow to stern, and face up, before the capsized kayaker climbs onto the boat deck and slides into the cockpit.

The event was funded by a volunteer’s private donation and led by the Medical Reserve Corps Team Co-Lead Raj Bais and Stacey Stoner, BI Parks and Rec Events Manager.
