Prepare in a Year 2025: Store 4 Weeks of Food
Our Prepare in a Year program helps you get ready for disasters, like large-scale earthquakes that isolate us from outside help for weeks or longer. By tackling one simple task per month, you can get your household in good shape by the end of a year.
The task for February is similar to that of January. Store enough food for all people in your household (including pets) for four weeks or more.
A Few Things to Remember
Check the expiration dates on all your stored foods. When food is close to expiring, donate it to Helpline House and replenish your supplies. It might help to pick a date on which to check the food every year.
Don’t store food your family doesn’t like. They probably won’t eat it. On the other hand, if your family only eats takeout, it’s time to start introducing some changes into your diet since you’re not going to be able to order out after a disaster.
Sign up for Veg Club, a monthly Zoom gathering run by our Food Resilience Team. They’ll teach you how to grow your own food.
You can buy emergency food supplies that last for a long time and don’t take up a lot of room. These are good options when storage is an issue. But do a taste test and make sure your family will eat the food!
Store your food in a place that is cool and dry and free of rodents. Also protect the supply to avoid damage in an earthquake or flood.
Store foods you will be able to prepare when the power is out.
Include treats to help your family get through the challenging weeks after a disaster.
