High Winds Predicted: Are You Ready?

This fall, the National Weather Service warned city emergency managers across the region, including Bainbridge City Emergency Coordinator Anne LeSage, that we should be expecting a colder, wetter winter. That experience may be starting today.

A high winds advisory has been issued for Western Washington combined with King Tides and a snow prediction for the mountains. That trifecta could result in power outages, travel difficulties, and coastal flooding.

The winds are expected starting today, November 19, around 2 p.m. The advisory expires around 4 a.m. Winds will be coming in from the southwest at 15 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph.

In addition, the National Weather Service expects the current “powerful storm system” to “continue to bring heavy mountain snow, rain, high winds, and hazardous marine conditions to the Pacific Northwest.”

Finally, we are on Day Three of a series of King Tides in Puget Sound. Today’s high tide at 8:16 a.m. was 12.4 feet.

Prepare for a power outage—charge your devices and make sure to have food and water ready. If traveling by vehicle, make sure your vehicle is stocked with blankets, food, water, chains, phone chargers, and a flashlight. If you live on the coast, secure loose objects that might be displaced by water. Wherever you are, secure objects that might be blown away.
