September: Specific Disasters

The disasters we are most likely to face on Bainbridge Island are earthquake, wildfire, landslide, and tsunami. Teach yourself about each and learn what to do to prepare.

Activity

This month we’ll focus on the disasters most likely to hit here.

  1. Find out what your fire evacuation zone is by looking at this map.

  2. Learn how to use a fire extinguisher.

  3. Make sure you have smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors installed in the proper locations and test them regularly.

  4. Read this article.

  5. Use straps to secure furniture and appliances that might fall in an earthquake. Read more here.

  6. If you live in a house, make sure it is bolted to the foundation.

  7. With your household members, practice dropping, covering, and holding on

  8. Learn what to do in the event of a tsunami. Read more here and here.

You may submit your documentation at any time up until the end of the first Friday of the following month. You may submit early for ensuing months. Remember to stamp your passport for each completed month.
