August: Pets & Livestock

In a disaster, you have a responsibility to make sure your pets and livestock are cared for. Do you have enough food and water stored to keep your animals alive for at least three weeks? That’s how long it might be before you are able to replenish supplies. Consider collaborating with neighbors to store supplies you can all use.

Activity

This month is all about the animals. Calculate how much water and food your animals will need for a 21-day period. Identify safe water sources, like ponds, streams, and rain barrels. Is the water safe to drink or will you need to treat it?

Create a care plan for your animals if disaster strikes when you are away from home. Do you have friends or neighbors who can help care for them?

Do your animals rely on any life-saving medication? Make sure you have enough on hand to get through several weeks.
