Emergency Blood Supply “Dangerously Low”
The Washington State Department of Health (WDOH) reported October 25 that state “blood banks are facing critical shortages of life-saving blood.” In particular, the shortages are affecting supplies of O and Rh- blood and platelets.
A robust blood supply is essential during a disaster, but an ongoing supply is always needed for trauma patients, transplant recipients, and people getting cancer treatments.
Blood donations decreased during the Covid-19 pandemic, and the shortages continue. WDOH explained that current surges in flu and the common cold may be keeping potential donors away.
