Great Shaking Balls of Fire: Today, 10:20 a.m., Drop, Cover, Hold
We've had the fire, we've had the smoke. Now it's time for the Great Shakeout, which, unlike the other things, is just an exercise. The exercise begins today, October 20 at 10:20. When your clock strikes that time, join people all over the world in responding as you would if there were an actual earthquake. What you ask, does that mean? Here's what to do:
- Drop. You want to protect yourself from flying debris and falling objects. Get on your hands and knees to protect vital organs.
- Cover. Cover your neck and head with one arm. If you've got study furniture nearby, crawl under it. If not, crawl next to an interior wall.
- Hold on. Use your other arm to hold on—if there's nothing to hold onto, use both arms to cover your head and neck.
If you use a cane, keep the cane nearby. If you use a walker or wheelchair, lock the wheels.
