In the event of a public health emergency or disaster Bainbridge Island may be isolated from the rest of the county for a prolonged period of time. Bainbridge Island Medical Reserve Corps (BIMRC) is a local volunteer unit created to engage the Bainbridge community by strengthening our public health, reducing vulnerability, building resilience, and improving community preparedness, response, and recovery capabilities.
BIMRC operates as part of the emergency response capabilities of Bainbridge Prepares in cooperation with COBI and BIFD, and in concert with our regional partners: the Kitsap Public Health District and the Northwest Health Response Network. Recent MRC activations have included providing staffing for COVID-19 testing sites at the Kitsap County drive-through test site, at the CHI/Franciscan St. Michael’s hospitals in Bremerton and Silverdale, and at the Washington Veteran’s Home in Port Orchard. Learn more about our N95 Fit Test Team here.
BIMRC is a reserve volunteer group to be called upon for medical and wellness care should the need arise. If you are a licensed healthcare worker living or working on Bainbridge Island you are eligible to join the BIMRC. The BIMRC offers members of the healthcare community interested in volunteering during a disaster the opportunity to:
- Learn how to better prepare for a disaster (both personally and professionally)
- Give back to the community as a volunteer during a disaster or public health emergency
- Gain valuable training in disaster preparedness and response

BIMRC is being constituted to assist fellow citizens with their healthcare needs during and after a disaster which may cut our island off from outside help for an extended period. We envision “standing up” a disaster medical clinic to provide a “next level” of care beyond the capabilities of our community hubs. We foresee the need for all types of medical, dental and veterinary personnel – both licensed healthcare workers and support staff.
We will provide appropriate training for all volunteers including online training opportunities, live training courses, potentially more advanced training depending on the volunteer roll. Even if you are unsure about the level of involvement you would like to have with BIMRC we encourage you to register as an MRC volunteer so that we can keep you in the loop with regard to training, volunteer and community activities involving the MRC.
