Bainbridge Island CERT Basic Training

May 10, 2019 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm

CERT is an integral part of community disaster response, that actively involves everyone in making our communities and nation safer, stronger and better prepared. All over the country, volunteers have organized community emergency response teams, inspiring people to get involved and take action. This Bainbridge Island CERT class is the Basic training, for citizens interested in beginning their journey with the Bainbridge Island CERT team.

The Bainbridge Island CERT team is a partnership between Bainbridge Prepares, the Bainbridge Island Fire Department and the City of Bainbridge Island. Working together, we aim to build resilience here on our Island, and bring skills to citizens in an accessible and engaging way. Should you choose to become an active member of the CERT team, or use this knowledge to take back to your families and build your individual response plan, these skills will be invaluable, and we look forward to working with you.

This CERT Basic class covers 30 hours of instruction and hands on learning – topics that will be covered include:

Disaster preparedness
Fire safety and suppression
Light search and rescue
CERT team organization
Disaster medical operations
Disaster psychology

This CERT training is FREE and open to any Bainbridge Island resident over the age of 18. The class size is limited, so please register today to ensure your spot.

Family Preparedness Classes

We’ve developed a series of family preparedness classes held twice a month, now being taught by the preparedness experts from Empact Northwest.

Each 90 minutes class covers 72-hour evacuation Go Bags, family reunification plans, and neighborhood mapping, as well as exercises that foster thoughtful conversation about disaster planning and identification of threats unique to our community. Register now for upcoming classes.

Verbal De-Escalation Training

We have also taught verbal de-escalation techniques from our police department via our Psychological First Aid (PFA) team. Should those classes be of interest to you, please let the PFA team lead know and sign up for the email alerts.

Wilderness First Responder Training

In 2017, 2018, and 2019 we offered Wilderness First Responder (WFR) courses, adding 100+ trained citizens to our Hubs team. If you’d like to receive alerts for WFR trainings in 2020, sign up here.

Are you already a WFR or a NOLS-trained responder? We’d love to have you join the Hubs team as well; please send us a note with your current certification and we’ll send you an invite to our quarterly practice drills.

Community Emergency Response Team Training

The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations.

Participants who take the entire course will use fire extinguishers on a real fire, perform search and rescue operations in the fire training tower, and participate in a disaster exercise. We’d love to have you join our team! For existing CERT members, here’s a list of  refresher courses. To learn more, contact the Bainbridge Island CERT team with questions.
