AED

Automated external defibrillators (AEDs) are easy-to-use medical devices that can analyze the heart rhythm of a nonresponsive person whose heart has stopped and, if necessary, deliver an electric shock to re-establish heart rhythm. They come with simple instructions, but CPR classes also provide training and practice in using them.

Here’s a good illustrated step-by-step tutorial on how to use an AED. Here’s another.

An AED is one of the tools that kept Buffalo Bills’ safety Damar Hamlin alive after his post-tackle collapse during a football game against the Bengals in early January. Read more here.

AEDs are great but they don’t serve much purpose if people don’t know where to find them. There are 94 AEDs on Bainbridge, located in all parts of the island. This interactive map shows all the locations. You can carry this map on your phone by downloading the PulsePoint app. The app can also immediately inform you of emergencies occurring in your community and can request your help when CPR is needed nearby.
