Introduction to Psychological First Aid (All Volunteers)

Psychological First Aid (PFA) is an evidence-informed set of actions useful after any disaster. These skills are easy to learn and can be administered by anyone with appropriate training. PFA can be incorporated into almost any role that a volunteer plays in a disaster situation;

In this 90 minute Introductory training you will learn the key principles of PFA as well as have an opportunity to practice them. You will gain training in the following areas:

  • How to identify a stress response in yourself and others.

  • How to calm yourself and others who have experienced a disaster

  • How to provide a sense of safety and comfort

  • How to stabilize individuals if needed using principles of active listening.

  • How to engage in relevant information gathering.

  • How to provide practical assistance. 

  • How to assist with Connection and social support. 

  • Information on stress responses and coping.
